Today, New York Knicks fans got another opportunity to watch Carmelo Anthony in Olympic action. In the quarterfinals of the basketball tournament, Team USA demolished the Argentinians by as score of 105-78. However, Anthony, USA’s all-time leading scorer, did not do much to distinguish himself.
Coming into the game, Anthony had shouldered a heavy burden, but he was not asked to do much in Wednesday’s rout. In the game, Coach Mike Krzyzewski only put the forward, who started the game, on the floor for 13:29. In that time, Melo struggled, as he shot 3-10 from the field and finished with just 7 points.
In contrast to his fellow forward, Golden State Warrior Kevin Durant led the way for Team USA; Durant shot an efficient 9-13 and finished the game with 27 points. The team also saw a major contribution from Paul George, who poured in 17 points. For the Argentinians, Captain Luis Scola and guard Manu Ginobili were the leading scorers, with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
After defeating Argentina, Team USA will advance to the semifinals, where they will face Spain, the 2012 Olympic Silver Medalists. On the other hand, with this loss, Team Argentina has been eliminated from the Olympic Basketball tournament. Many believe that this will be the last International game that the Argentinian core, which won the 2004 Gold Medal, plays in.
