For the second time in three years, the New York Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips is Major League Soccer’s (MLS) leading scorer.
Wright-Phillips finished the season with 24 goals, finishing one ahead of New York City Football Club’s (NYCFC) David Villa. Had Wright-Phillips and Villa scored the same number of goals, Wright-Phillips would have won the golden boot on the first tiebreaker – assists. Wright-Phillips finished the season with five assists while Villa had four.
This is his second MLS Golden Boot, winning the 2014 MLS Golden Boot with 27 goals, tied for the most ever in MLS.
Wright-Phillips started the season going scoreless for nearly two months, opening his account on April 24 against Orlando with two goals. Before the Copa America break in early June, Wright-Phillips had eight goals, capping off with a hat-trick against Toronto on May 28. Wright-Phillips ended the season on a high note, scoring 15 goals in his last 13 games.
Wright-Phillips and the Red Bulls finished first in the Eastern Conference this season, clinching a bye for the playoffs and a spot in the CONCACAF Champions league in the 2017-2018 season. The Red Bulls will next play in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals against the winner of DC United versus Montreal Impact, who play on October 27
