Chase Headley is Good at First Impressions

Chase Headley awoke Tuesday morning in Chicago, Illinois, expecting to play at Wrigley Field that evening with a Padres uniform on.

Instead, Headley found himself going to sleep in New York City, in a whirlwind day for the 8 year veteran.

News broke early in the day that the Yankees had traded for him, sending Yangervis Solarte and Rafael de Paula to San Diego.  Headley shaved his beard (facial hair being against Yankee team rules) and was thrust on to the first flight out and landed at LaGuardia Airport just 35 minutes before first pitch in the Bronx between the Yankees and Texas Rangers.

He arrived at Yankee Stadium an inning in to the game, quickly donning his brand new uniform and introducing himself to players and coaches, where he could be seen in the dugout repeating “I’m Chase Headley, nice to meet you.”

Little did anyone know Headley would be introducing himself in a much bigger way.

In the bottom of the 14th he drove in Ryan Roberts on a single to left centerfield, winning the game and recording his first RBI as a New York Yankee.

“He’s had a whirlwind of a day,” said Yankees Manager Joe Girardi, “He got traded, had to pack his stuff, get here and he gets a huge hit.”

A breathless Headley added ,”Obviously, you have mixed emotions when you’ve been at a place for as long as I’ve been in San Diego. But I couldn’t be happier to be a Yankee. It’s unbelievable. Can’t even believe I’m saying that. A long day, but a great way to finish.”
